Portugal and Argentina with similar expectations

Portugal will try to continue their winning start in the 2011 FIVB Volleyball World League as they face Argentina this weekend

Porto, Portugal, June 01, 2011 - Portugal began their return to the FIVB Volleyball World League in the best possible way by clinching two wins (3-2 and 3-1) over Finland last week, and will be looking to do the same against Argentina at home this week.

Argentina sit third in Pool C after a straight sets loss and victory over Serbia last week.

The games will take place on June 3 and 4 at 21:30 and 16:00 local time respectively.

Portugal and Argentina are old acquaintances, since they played several times in the past, most notably in the 2006 World League and the 2002 World Championships. On that occasion, current coach Javier Weber was setting for Argentina.

Nowadays, the reality is quite different, but the goals that motivate both teams are similar, as well as their ambitions in reaching the final phase of the competition (to be held in Gdansk-Sopot, Poland from July
6 to 10).

The visitory have some veterans but the majority of the group is composed by young players, in the particular case of Sebastian Solé and Nicolás Uriarte still entering in the twenties.

Amongst the new talents, a brighter star shines more than the others: Facundo Conte who scored 18 points in their win over Serbia, son of Hugo Conte, the historic Argentinean player.

“Argentina was very well in their second match, they practically didn’t made any errors and presented themselves very strong in the attack and in the block” Portuguese player
Alexandre Ferreira who made his debut against Finland last week, said.

"With the course of time of the World League, our team is gaining rhythm and more balanced," Argentina coach Weber said. "Now we will face difficult opponents, since they have a similar level to our own. Portugal has a great volume of game and a great aggressiveness."
