Puerto Rico still lookng for first points

USA and Puerto Rico are ready to battle again on Saturday in San Juan

San Juan, Puerto Rico, June 4, 2011 – USA overcame Puerto Rico in their first match of the second weekend of the 2011 FIVB Volleyball World League on Friday as the tandem of veterans Clayton Stanley and Reid Priddy combined to score 39 points, but the U.S. also needed a strong contribution from newcomers Brian Thornton and Paul Lotman to stabilize the ship en route to a 3-1 victory.

Setter Thornton and wing spiker Lotman replaced Donald Suxho and Matt Anderson, respectively, in sets three and four when the Americans dominated the home side after two tight opening sets.

The Puerto Ricans won their first ever set in the FIVB World League and were one point away from taking the second and securing their first point in Pool A but couldn’t close the set out at 24-23 and ended up losing 29-27.

A frustrated Hector "Picky" Soto, Puerto Rico’s captain, expressed his disappointment and blamed a lack of concentration for losing the second set, in which they saw leads of 8-4 and 12-8 evaporate.

USA coach Alan Knipe and captain Reid Priddy both gave credit to the contribution of Thornton and Lotman, with Knipe paying special compliments to his young setter, who had a baptism of fire in his first significant participation in the World League.
