Russia set to begin home matches

Russia at a training session in the run up to their match opening 2011 FIVB Volleyball World League match with Japan this weekend
Ufa, Russia, May 25, 2011 – World No.2 Russia is set to begin its 2011 FIVB Volleyball World League this Friday and Saturday against Japan at home in Ufa as they look to go one better than the silver medal they won last year.

The two sides last faced off in Surgut during the 2009 edition and Japan shocked everyone as they came out with a stunning victory.

With the National Championship only just ending Russia has had little time to prepare but still managed to fit in two friendly matches with Poland.

Russia coach Vladimir Alekno thinks the test games in Poland came at the right time since as he had the chance to try some new players.

“I feel good about the players on the roster – they are the best guys we have in this country,” he said. “They are motivated and wish to play and win.

“I can’t name the main rivals – it’s going to be a very long tournament. Our first goal is to qualify for the finals. Every competitor can play high level volleyball.”
