Team profile

In Javier Weber's third year as coach, Argentina will be looking to capitalize on recent successes. Argentina had a historic 2009, with their best campaign at the World League (fifth), qualifying for the World Championship and placing second place at the South American Championship. Argentina hosted the Final Round of the World League in 2010. Weber reorganized the team at last year's World Championship, putting faith in his young players, and the move paid off as the side finished ninth. Facundo Conte shone and Rodrigo Quiroga easily slotted into the captain's role. Luciano De Cecco surprised with wonderful setting, Alexis González showed that he deserved his place as libero and supporting them were Ocampo, Pereyra, Blanco Costa, Crer and the very young Solé. Argentina won bronze at the World Championship in Buenos Aires in 1982 and finished ninth at last year's Championship in Italy. In the Olympics, they took bronze in Seoul in 1988, while in the Pan-American Games, they have earned one gold and three bronze medals. Currently, there are 30,000 registered players in Argentina.

Coach profile

Javier Weber became Argentina coach in 2009 and immediately took them to fifth place in the World League. With 613 caps as a setter for Argentina (1985-2002), Weber took part in some of Argentina’s greatest successes, including bronze at the 1988 Olympics, gold at the 1995 Pan American Games, and three Olympic and five World Championship campaigns. Weber found more success as a coach in the Brazilian Superliga (2002) before returning to Argentina in 2006 to coach Bolivar, winning two national league titles. Last year, he led Argentina to fifth in the final round of the World League and ninth at the Men’s World Championship.
