Alexander Butko started his professional career at the age of 15 for Belorussian club “Kommunalnik” and then moved to Russia, where he won a silver medal in the Superleague three times with different teams – “Dynamo” (Moscow), “Iskra” (Odintsovo) and “Lokomotiv” (Novosibirsk). With “Iskra” Butko also won bronze at the 2008/09 CEV Champions League. After winning the Russian National Cup last winter Butko gained the chance to test himself on the European stage. Butko debuted for Russia during the 2009 FIVB World League match against Cuba. From that period until now on he is considered a solid substitute for Sergey Grankin at setter.
