Profile

|
Joao Jose was born in Portimao in 1978, where he started to play at the age of 16 in Che Lagoense.
Three years later he moved to the Madeira Island where he played for AD Machico and CS Maritimo. He returned to the mainland in 2003 where he played one year for Castelo da Maia winning the National Championship. In 2004 he started to play for Vfb Friedrichshafen in Germany where he won six national titles, four national cups and also the European Champions League title in 2006/07.
João Jose is, without question, the most international Portuguese volleyball player with the most success at European level. The 195-cm middle-blocker has played for the senior team since 2000, is their captain and often leads both the attack and defense. In 2002, when Portugal was ranked eighth in the World Championships he was considered the best blocker of the event and was included in the Super Seven Selection. Amongst his best results in the national team are fifth place in the 2005 World League, 10th place in the 2005 European Championships and the European League Champions title the side won last year.
