The Brazilian libero was the champion of the World League eight times (2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010). Sergio played for the first time in the Brazilian adult team in 2001, when he won the South American Championship. In 2003, 2005 and 2007, he won the same competitions. He was the first place in the World Cup (2003) and won a gold medal in the Olympic Games, in Athens. He was world champion in 2002 and 2006. In 2007, after the World League, he won the World Cup, the Pan-American Games and the South American Championship. In 2008, he got his second Olympic medal, the silver, in Beijing, and also got the second place in America’s Cup, besides of moving back to Brasil Vôlei Clube. In 2009, defended Brazil in the World Grand Champions Cup and in the South American Championship, winning both tournaments. A back injury sidelined the libero in the World Championship 2010. Returned in 2011 to win the South American Championship, finish second in the World League and third in the World Cup.
