Cuba overcome Argentina in straight sets in final Pool D match

Formosa, Argentina, July 9th, 2010 – Cuba clinched its 11th victory of the 2010 FIVB World League with a 3-0 (25-16, 26-24, 25-19) win over Argentina in the last match of Pool D in the Intercontinental Round as both sides now look towards the Final Round.

Argentina automatically qualify for the next stage as they will host the event in Cordoba from July 21-25 while Cuba qualified on Thursday following their first win of the weekend over Argentina

Rolando Cepeda Abreu topped the scores with 12 points for the visitors while Guillermo Garcia led the host with nine points. Cuba had a 39-25 lead in spiking over Argentina as the match conclude on Friday evening.

Cuba rotated players to give all the chance of gaining more experience prior to the Final Round and with Bell Cisnero’s serves Cuba got the first four points of the first set. The host team reacted to take the lead but Cuba found their momentum to claim the set.

The second set was a tight affair up until the very end of the set. However Cuba just had the edge to move into a 2-0 lead.

Both teams continued to put on a great show for local fans in the third set but Cuba were intelligent in their shots and saw out the win.

Cuba finish the Intercontinental Round with just one loss while Argentina will have to up their performance as they finished winless.
