Cairo, Egypt, July 7, 2010 - Finland claimed their fourth win of the 2010 FIVB World League on Wednesday night with a straight sets (25-18, 25-18, 25-14) victory over home side Egypt in Cairo, securing third place in Pool C leaving Egypt bottom of the group in the final weekend of the Intercontinental Round.
The victory gives Finland a 4-8 win-loss record as Egypt falls to 1-10, their sole victory coming over the visitors in their opening match of the tournament.
Finland's Sivula Urpo topped the scores with 16 points while Abdel Latif Ahmed led Egypt with 10 points.
Both teams started the first set well with the hosts taking a slight lead early on. The Finnish gained the lead however following powerful blocking and attack, forcing the Egypt coach to take a time out. However the hosts couldn't regroup and surrendered the set.
The Egyptian team were far from their best at the beginning of the second set but brought the game level at 13-13. However the regained control, taking advantage of numerous defensive errors from the home side, eventually extending their lead to 2-0.
Poor reception and blocking from the home side gave the visitors the lead in the third and although Egypt tried to steady themselves they couldn’t stop the visitors as they stormed to the win.
The two sides will meet again on Thursday in the final match of their 2010 FIVB World League campaign.
