Bulgaria beat the Netherlands to set up exciting final weekend with Brazil

Bulgaria fans cheer for their side as the hosts claimed their second victory of the weekend over the Netherlands
Varna, Bulgaria, July 4, 2010 - Bulgaria claimed their eighth win of the 2010 FIVB World League as they overcame the Netherlands 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 32-30) at home in Varna to set up a pulsating winner-takes all clash with Brazil next weekend.

Many members of the State were in attendance at the match, headed by Sports Minister Mr. Svilen Neykov.

The venue created a unique atmosphere which helped give the hosts confidence to start well. However the Netherlands showed determination to remain in the match until the very end as Bulgaria's solid block helped them see out the first set.

The Netherlands stormed to an early lead in the second set as Dick Kooy helped his team remain ahead up until the midway point. However Bulgaria captain Vladimir Nikolov helped changed the situation, reigniting his teammates spirit. Some strong blocks and unforced mistakes from the visitors saw Bulgaria regain control and take the set.

The Netherlands' inconsistent play in the third set saw them implode early on as the hosts marched to an early lead. However Peter Blange's side rediscovered their composure and fought back to steal the lead back. Bulgaria's coach Silvano Prandi took a risk to put on 20-year-old middle blocker Teodor Todorov and with his 207cm, his presence floundered the Dutch. The set eventually went to a number of tie-break points before Bulgaria held their nerve to see out the set 32-30 and with that the match.

Bulgaria now just need a 3-1 win over defending champions Brazil when they visit next week as the Netherlands host Korea with only pride to play for.
