Germany defeated by Cuba in Trier

The German triple block against Cuba's Fernando Hernandez during their match in Trier, Germany on Friday

Trier, Germany, June 25, 2010 – Germany failed in their first attempt to gain revenge over their two losses against Cuba in Havana two weeks ago as the hosts went down 3-2 (25-23, 17-25, 26-24, 23-25, 15-13) to the Pool D leaders in front of 2.000 spectators at home in Trier.

With the win Cuba stay at the top of Pool D with 15 points with Germany chasing on 13 points. The home side's Georg Grozer topped the scores with 26 points while Cuba's young sensation Wilfredo Leon scored 18 for Cuba.

The match had an even start before the Germans made the first break and took a narrow lead. However Joandry Leal brought the visitors even before the visitors took the set.

Germany's Lukas Bauer was the difference in the second with good attacks, helping bring his side even in front of thousands of jubilant fans.

However Cuba took the third despite a number of substitutes from Germany coach Raúl Lozano.

With the 2-1 lead the Cubans seemed very confident and took the lead directly in the fourth. However several good attacks and blocks brought Germany back into the game to take the match to a tie-breaker.

However Cuba's serve proved too good and their block helped see out the match.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday at 12pm GMT.
