Parma, Italy, June 4, 2010 - Italy beat France in straight sets (27-25, 26-24, 25-17) in their opening FIVB World League 2010 encounter in front of 4,200 fans in Parma, Italy on Friday night. Italy started well and despite many mistakes at the end of the first set the side took an early lead thanks Emanuele Birarelli’s solid serving.

France put up a stubborn fight in the second set however the home side rallied and gained the upper hand before Gabriele Maruotti helped the Italians see out the third set and the victory in their opening match.
Italy are likely to face resurgent French team on Saturday as the two sides face off in their second match at 6pm GMT on Saturday.
