Poland and Cuba face off for a spot in Final Round

Poland and Cuba both still remain on course for a Final Round berth as the two teams clash in what is set to be an epic weekend of action
Lodz, Poland, July 1, 2010 - Poland and Cuba are set to clash in one of the most important matches so far in Pool D of the 2010 FIVB World League as both teams vie for a spot in the Final Round.

After four weeks of intense competition, the European Champions are placed second in the group just three points behind the Cubans. Nothing but two wins will keep Poland in contention for a spot in the Final Round in Cordoba, Argentina from July 21-25 while Cuba will be looking to advance their lead at the top of the pool before facing Final Round hosts Argentina away next week.

In the last round Cuba defeated Germany twice away from home.

However Daniel Castellani's Polish side achieved maximum points in their matches against the Argentineans last weekend. The coach said he was most satisfied with two things.

“I am happy that we did not lose any points and the battle for a spot in the Finals is still ongoing," he said. "It was equally significant to me to smoothly bring in the players who have been with the team for only a couple of days: Pawel Zagumny, Daniel Plinski and Mariusz Wlazly. We knew that their form will not be the highest, but it was crucial that they get out on the court and experience the atmosphere of the match. They are still in the process of searching for the right rhythm of play, but I think that they performed quite well."

The players mentioned above should perform even better thanks to further training with the team. The Poles will also be able to count on an even larger support from the home crowd than during their games in Wroclaw. The Atlas Arena is sold out so more than 13,000 will be watching as the two sides battle it out on Saturday at 2pm local.
