Argentina and Poland looking forward to first victory in San Juan

Triple Argentine blocking with Scholtis, Spajic and Giani
San Juan, Argentina, June 9, 2010 - The FIVB World League comes to Argentina for the first time this year on Friday as the Final Round hosts face Poland in San Juan on the second weekend of the 2010 edition.

Both teams will be looking to make up for last weekend’s losses as Argentina was defeated by Cuba and Poland was beaten by World League new boys Germany.

Additionally there will be an added underlying battle between the two Argentine coaches, Javier Weber for Argentina and Daniel Castellani for Poland, as both are former team mates from the Argentina side who picked up bronze at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games. Furthermore, Weber coached Castellani for a six years, so it will be a case of student meeting master.

Argentina will travel to San Juan on Wednesday with 16 players from which 12 will be picked. Local fans are already excited, especially with the prospect of three local idols; Captain Rodrigo Quiroga, Alejandro Spajic and Federico Pereyra all returning to the province in which they were born in.

Poland arrived in San Juan on Tuesday afternoon without setter Pawel Zagumny, opposite Mariusz Wlazly and middle-blocker Daniel Plinski however Piotr Gruszka and wing-spiker Michal Winiarski did travel with the side.

Argentina and Poland played each other in San Juan in a friendly in 2002 with the home team picking up two victories, and again in 2007, this time in the FIVB World League, with Poland winning all four matches in Pool D, under another Argentine coach, Raúl Lozano.

Both matches will start at 9:10pm local time and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
