Brazil, Poland continue to evolve heading into second match

Brazilian captain Murilo Endres, left, was the top scorer in the opener

Sao Paulo, Brazil, June 13, 2009 – Brazil and Poland will meet for the second time in as many days Sunday in the first weekend of play at the 2009 FIVB World League tournament.

The match gets under way at 10 a.m. (local time) at Ibirapuera Gymnasium in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The first match between the teams, played on Saturday, finished with a 3-1 win by the host team.

Brazil, who are without retired middle-blocker Gustavo Endres, opposite Andre Nascimento and wing-spiker Dante Amaral, are a team in transition, but head coach Bernardo Rezende looks to be assembling quite a strong squad.

"We are working in the same direction we did with the previous team. The goal is having many options in the squad so we can make many changes during the matches. That’s an important weapon in major competitions. It is too early to say this group will offer as many technical options as the previous one, but I am certain we can develop into a competitive team,” said Bernardo.

The Polish team is also without some important retired players, including opposite Mariusz Wlaszly, wing-spiker Sebastian Swiderski and middle-blocker Daniel Plinski. For new head coach Daniel Castellani, the team needs to develop its skills to be considered one of the best squads in the world.

"Our group is composed of new talents from Polish volleyball. They all have great physical potential, so we are working hard to develop them technically. Poland is always a force in blocking so we are focusing on improving other skills, such as digging and receiving. Nowadays, a good team needs to be balanced. Being good in only one area is not enough," said Castellani.

After the match in Sao Paulo, both Brazil and Poland will remain in South America, with Brazil playing against Finland next weekend in Brasilia, and Poland traveling to Caracas to face Venezuela.
