Russell Holmes was born on July 1, 1982 in Anaheim, Calif. He grew up in Fountain Valley, Calif. The middle blocker (205 cm, 95 kg) played his collegiate years at BYU where he was named AVCA All-American and also earned All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation First Team accolades for his accomplishments as a senior.
After his collegiate career, Holmes traveled overseas and played for Austria’s HYPO TIROL in the Middle European Volleyball Zone Association where he helped lead the team to winning the MEVZA Cup and the Austrian Cup.
Holmes joined the National Team in 2009 and played in five exhibition matches with the United States in Brazil. He finished the tournament scoring 30 points including, seven blocks in 15 sets played. He also appeared in five World League pool play matches where the U.S. finished sixth.
During his early years, Russell played for the Long Beach club where he won the Junior Olympics gold medal and also garnered himself the title of All-American. In 2001, Volleyball Magazine named him to their Fab 50 list.
His wife’s name is Julie and he has a daughter, Sadie Rae, who was born in July of 2007.
