The Brazilian libero won the FIVB World League title seven times (2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2009). Sergio played for the first time in the Brazilian Senior team in 2001, when he won the South American Championship. In 2003, 2005 and 2007, he won the same competitions. He got the first place in the FIVB World Cup (2003) and clinched a gold medal at Athens Olympic Games in 2004. He won the FIVB World Championship in 2002 and 2006. In 2007, after the FIVB World League, he won the FIVB World Cup, the Pan-American Games and the South American Championship. In 2008, he got his second Olympic medal, this time a silver one, in Beijing, and also finished second at the America’s Cup. He also took the decision to move back to Brasil Vôlei Clube. In 2009, he defended Brazil in the FIVB World Grand Champions Cup and in the South American Championship, winning both tournaments.
