Young Austrian team seeking ticket to next round in Vienna

Austrian head coach Claudio Cuello will head the hosts in their campaign for the 2010 FIVB World Championship
Vienna, Austria, December 31, 2008 - Starting from Saturday, January 3, up to next Monday, the Austrian Men’s national team will face Romania, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Hungary in Vienna’s Budocenter in the first Round of the 2010 FIVB Men's Volleyball World Championships.

A total of 215 national teams are competing for the qualification to the Final Round of the 2010 FIVB World Championships. There are four pools scheduled for the first round in Europe. The four preliminary groups are to be hosted in Austria, Great Britain, Latvia and Azerbaijan. Only the winning teams of each pool will move on to the next round. There are 22 tickets at stake worldwide for the final round scheduled in Italy, with hosts plus Brazil - as titleholder – already qualified.

As per the current FIVB ranking, Romania stands in 56th place and therefore might appear to be the pre-favourite for the pool to be played this coming weekend in Vienna. Austria is ranked 62nd, Hungary is 73rd, with Bosnia and Herzegovina standing 92nd on the list. The Austrian rosters includes some experienced athletes such as team captain Daniel Razvan Gavan as well as young talents Marcus Guttmann, Philip Ichovski and Florian Ringseis, who are also playing for the Austrian Under-19 national team.

Local head coach Claudio Cuello said, “The first round of the 2010 FIVB World Championship is another step on our way to the 2011 European Championships which will be held jointly in Austria and in the Czech Republic. We are focusing on the development of our young players. Nevertheless, our goal is to qualify for the second round.”

He and his team are looking forward to the matches against Romania and Hungary as well as against newcomer Bosnia & Herzegovina.
