Cuban Captain: “We can’t expect a Russian’s defeat”

Havana, Cuba, July 17, 2009 .- Excerpts from the press conference after Cuba’s triumph 3-0 over Japan in Pool C of 20th WL 2009.

Japan Captain Daisuke Usami: “We gave the best of ourselves, but it wasn’t enough. It was a tough game, a great show”.

Cuba Captain Roberlandy Simon: “We were tense, even though we are in a great shape. We have to keep it up because this was a very important match. Japan is a weaker opponent and they weren’t at their best tonight. I hope we’ll play better. We can’t expect a Russian’s defeat, we have to make it our way, earn the ticket to the Final round. It was hot tonight, but we fought all the way”.

Japan Head Coach Tatsuya Ueta:  “We were not so good tonight. We had four new players. Shiro Furuta played in Belgrade’s College Games last week and joined us just three days ago. He played poorly, and so did injured Tatsuya Fukuzawa. I think tomorrow we’ll have a great chance to win. We have to analyze our mistakes in order to improve our level. Tonight I really realized how strong Cubans are.”

Cuba Head Coach Orlando Samuells: “My players were a little bit nervous at the beginning. After loosing two matches against Bulgaria we somehow lost confidence. But we knew we had to sweep Japan. We came to win and played better, but still he struggled receiving. It was hard for Japan to play here, after all the traveling. Tomorrow we have to win convincingly and I know we can do better in Finals. We know Brazil is the favorite team in Belgrade, but we know them and everything it’s possible right now”.
