Cuba shoots for sweep over Bulgaria in Havana

Cuba celebrated too much in its opening game

Havana, Cuba, June 13, 2009 - Cuba will try to complete an unexpected sweep over Bulgaria after a win last night at Ciudad Deportiva Coliseum.

The talented Cuban team showed great potential in its 3-1 victory over the strong and experienced European team.

Cuban captain Roberlandy Simon said he and his teammates are determined to do their best: "Our main goal is victory and we’ll try to win the second match, too. We are very happy with the support of our fans. Bulgaria is a great team, so beating them will increase our hopes of qualifying for the Final Round. We need to improve our blocking and defense."

Meanwhile, Bulgarian captain Andrey Zhekov expressed his hopes of playing at a higher level in the second game to leave Cuba with at least one win.

Zhekov praised Cuba’s strong service game and admitted Bulgaria couldn’t find a way to respond to it.

A big crowd is expected at the Ciudad Deportiva Coliseum following Cuba’s first win last night.
