FIVB confirms World League 'Match of the Week' schedule: Six live Intercontinental Round matches made available free of charge to TV channels

The FIVB World League "Match of the Week" is free to use for television channels

Lausanne, May 28, 2008 - The FIVB World League "Match of the Week," which is free for use by television channels, has been decided for each of the six weekends of Intercontinental Round action in the 2008 edition of Men's Volleyball's flagship annual event.

The carefully selected "Match of the Week" is available to the World League's valued Host Broadcasters and other TV channels and is a successful way of introducing the World League to TV viewers.

TV channels interested in broadcasting a "Match of the Week" free of charge are requested to contact the FIVB at tv.marketing@fivb.org for further information.

During the first weekend, the Pool A match between Brazil and Serbia on Sunday, June 15, in Sao Paulo will be free to be shown live at 13:00 GMT (10:00 local time).

The available match on the second weekend will be the Pool C face-off between Spain and Finland on Sunday, June 22, at 10:30 GMT (12:30 local time) in Valladolid.

Italy host Russia on Saturday, June 28, at 16:30 GMT (18:30 local time) in Pool B in Rome for the free-to-air match on the third weekend.

Serbia against Brazil on Sunday, July 6, at 18:30 GMT (20:30 local time) in Novi Sad is available to air on the fourth weekend.

Poland playing Japan on Saturday, July 12, in Pool D in Lodz at 18:00 GMT (20:00 local time) is the chosen match on the fifth weekend.

The sixth "Match of the Week" is Bulgaria against USA on Sunday, July 20, in Varna at 14:30 GMT (17:30 local time) in Pool C on the final weekend of Intercontinental Round action.

The World League, started by the FIVB in 1990, is a spectacular showcase for the crème de la crème of Men's Volleyball. The total attendance for the 2007 edition was 637,000 fans with total TV coverage of 2,244 hours. The Final Round in Poland was covered by 31 different TV channels, commented on in 23 languages, beamed to 110 countries and had a TV audience of more than 1.1 billion.

The 2008 edition will see 96 matches over six consecutive weekends in 41 cities across the globe with teams competing for more than USD 20 million in Prize Money.

The six Intercontinental Rounds begin the weekend of June 13-15 and end the weekend of July 18-20. The teams are divided into four pools, with each team playing their pool opponents twice over a weekend both home and away. Brazil, France, Serbia, Venezuela are in Pool A, Russia, Cuba, Korea, Italy in Pool B, USA, Bulgaria, Spain, Finland in Pool C and Poland, Japan, China, Egypt in Pool D.

The Final Round will be contested by six teams in Rio de Janeiro through July 23-27, where hosts Brazil will be looking for their sixth-straight triumph.
