Canada and Ukraine Take Cyprus by Storm

Geroskipou, Cyprus, 31 July 2008 - The two Canadian and the two Ukrainian entrants at the Cyprus FIVB Challenger remain undefeated and have advanced to the fourth round of play here. A total of 20 women's teams are competing for a purse of $30,000 in this holiday resort on the southern shores of Cyprus, which hosts an FIVB event for the third year running.

Elizabeth Maloney and Kathrine Zakrewski got through the first round on a bye and then defeated Luxembourg's Jeanne Schneider and Norma Zambon 2-0 in Round II and upset the tournaments No. 1 seeds Isabelle Forrer and Sarah Schmocker of Switzerland 2-1 in Round III. Their fellow-Canadians Anouk Boileau and Marie-Christine Mondor, the tournament's No. 2 seeds, also advanced on a bye from the first round and then rallied from 12-13 down in the tie-break to edge Greece's Pola Kitsou and Dida Nastou in Round II, before ousting Denmark's Charlotte Dyhr and Tine Rose Erriksen in straight sets.

The Ukraine's Natalya Shumeyko and Alona Malysheva had a bye in Round I and then scored victories over Greece's Elina Papadopoulou and Athena Papafotiou 2-0 and Russia's Ekaterina Khomyakova and Daria Yarzutkina in a three-set cliff-hanger. The second Ukrainian team of Zinayida Lyubymova and Yuliya Nozhyna defeated Great Britain's Liane Herbert and Helen Brown and Slovenia's Tadeja Veit and Katarina Juhart--both in straight sets.

The Cyprus FIVB Challenger continues here Friday and concludes Saturday with the semi-finals and medals matches.
