Egypt Head Coach selects squad for 2008 FIVB World League; Iran camp cancelled

Egypt triple block against Russia in the 2007 FIVB World League

Cairo, Egypt, May 16, 2008 – Egypt Head Coach Ahmed Zakaria has selected 19 players for the 2008 FIVB World League and they will now start their preparations for a third-straight appearance in the competition.

Preparations will not, however, include a training camp in Iran after Egypt Volleyball Federation officials cancelled the planned session.

The selected players are Abdalla Abdel Salam, Ashraf Aboul Hassan, Mohamed Abdel Rahman (setters), Hamdy El Safi, Saleh Fathy, Mohamed Abdel Monem, Ahmed Yossef, Mahmoud Raouf, Mohamed El Daabousi (attackers), Mohamed Ali, Hossam Shaarawy, Abdel Latif Othman, Mohamed El Nafrawi, Ahmed Mosaad (centers) Ahmed Salah, Mohamed Gabal, Mahmoud Mansour (opposites), Wael El Aidy and Mahmed Meawad (liberos).

The preparation program will start with a local camp in the Olympic Center and then the team travels to another camp in Alexandria before their first match against Poland on June 13.

Egypt will start the 2008 World League Intercontinental Round with two local matches against Poland in the first weekend and two at home to Japan in the second weekend.

The Egyptians will be looking for their first ever World League victory after going winless in 2006 and 2007.

The Egyptian Volleyball Federation changed the strategy of organization this year, with the team spending two weekends in second capital Alexandria, which enjoys good weather this time of the year being a major city by the Mediterranean Sea.

The third weekend of home matches will be held as usual in Cairo at the Cairo Stadium complex which boasts a 30,000 capacity that housed one of the biggest attendances in the whole competition last year.

The Egyptian media are looking positively at Egypt’s chances this year in the World League with the chances of a first victory looking favourable in Pool D alongside Poland, China and Japan.

Egypt defeated China in the 2005 FIVB Grand Champions Cup and endured marathon five-setters three times against Japan in their homeland at the 2005 Grand Champions Cup, 2006 World Championships and 2007 World Cup, but each time Japan took the tiebreak set.

The competition will be covered by all the local media in Egypt and will be transmitted live through a local Egyptian Channel, an Egyptian Satellite channel and the Nile Sports Channel.
