France secure opening victory in first crossover pool match

French captain Stephane Antiga

Italy's captain Samuele Papi: "I feel very sad that we did not win. We were leading 2-1, then we gave away the fourth set and couldn't recover in the fifth."

Italy's head coach Gianpaolo Montali: "This is our fourth tie-break against France and the third that we have lost. They put more on the court than we did today and deserved to win."

France's captain Stephane Antiga: "We are very happy, as we recovered after being one set ahead. We have some great stars, such as Granvorka, Castard and Le Marrec and the collective is one of our big strengths."

France's head coach Philippe Blain: "We had some trouble with side-outs and opposites on the second line, but I am proud of my team. We have not just come to participate; we are aiming for a place in the semi-finals.
