One likens him to a veteran school professor in
charge of his pupils. At 59-years-of-age Roberto
Garcia is one of the more experienced coaches on
the World League circuit however, despite his
extensive coaching background, it has only been
since the latter stages of 2003 since he has
been in charge of the Cuban national men’s side.
At the start of his tenure, Cuba was coming off
two last-place finishes in the World League but
Garcia has turned things round and results have
started to swing back towards what they were
during the glory days of the 90’s.
Garcia has over 30-years coaching experience,
and in that time obtained a degree in Physical
Education form the Manuel Fajardo Superior
Institute of Havana, having began his Volleyball
coaching career in 1971 when he looked after
local school and junior teams. From there, he
successfully rose through the ranks managing
squads in Cuban first division tournaments.
In the 1979-80 season, Garcia gained some
invaluable experience on the international
coaching scene when he took the reigns of the
Iraqi men’s national Volleyball team, but it
wasn’t until 20 years later until he was offered
the responsibility of being head coach of the
Junior national Cuban side in 1999, a
responsibility he duly accepted. Garcia didn’t
disappoint as he went on to lead the junior side
to victory at the
2000 NORCECA Junior
Championships. A fifth place finish at the World
Junior Championships in Poland followed in 2001.
Now in charge of the senior side Garcia is
starting to mould Cuba’s young side into a
potent attacking unit, which are building
towards the 2008 Olympics. His first time in
charge during a World League campaign in 2004
saw Cuba immediately improve their win tally and
now in 2005, one expects his side to make
further steps in the right direction towards the
podium.
