Brazil, Cuba and Portugal join Poland and
Greece with two wins
Lausanne,
Switzerland, May 29, 2005 The opening weekend
of the 2005 World League drew to a close on
Sunday amongst scenes of great colour and
support from fans around the world and after the
first round, five teams - defending champions
Brazil, Cuba, Portugal, Poland and Greece all
managed to collect two wins from as many
matches. With Poland (7*) and Greece (8=) having
gone top of Pool C on Saturday after collecting
their second victories over Argentina (8=) and
Serbia & Montenegro (3) respectively, Sunday saw
Portugal beat Japan 3-1 (23-25, 25-22, 25-16,
25-19) and Brazil beat Venezuela 3-2 (23-25,
25-21, 25-10, 20-25, 15-13) to send both sides
to the head of Pool A. Meanwhile, Cuba went to
the top of Pool B alone after beating Bulgaria
3-0 (25-20, 26-24, 25-23) after Italy had
reversed a straight sets loss to France on
Friday with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-13) win.

Poland & Greece make it a double
Lausanne,
Switzerland, May 28, 2005 Following
Friday's spectacular first day of the 2005
World League, two Pool C teams - Poland and
Greece made it two wins from as many
matches on Saturday with Poland beating
Argentina 3-1 (19-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-22)
while Greece beat Serbia & Montenegro 3-1
(23-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-19), both set
margins exact replicas from Friday. In
Saturday's other matches defending champions
Brazil started with a hard fought 3-1
(25-19, 32-34, 25-22, 37-35) win over
Venezuela while Portugal won their opening
match against Japan 3-0 (25-22, 27-25,
25-22). Current standings see Poland and
Greece with two wins in Pool C, France and
Cuba with one win a piece in Pool B while
Pool A has only seen victories going the way
of Brazil and Portugal. Four more matches
are left be played in this opening round of
the 2005 World League with Portugal playing
Japan, Italy hosting France, Bulgaria taking
on Cuba and Venezuela at home to Brazil

The match of the week by satellite
Lausanne,
Switzerland, May 27, 2005
The FIVB Board of Administration decided,
during its meeting from 29 April to 1st May,
to broadcast by satellite the match of the
week in the World League competition.
For the first week-end of the event, the FIVB
decided to choose the Italy-France match,
which will take place in Catania (Italy) on
Sunday 29 May as of 2 p.m. GMT (4 p.m. local
time).

Battle on as Cuba & Bulgaria open 2005 World
League
Lausanne,
Switzerland, May 27, 2005 World number 16 Cuba
and world number 13 Bulgaria, who surprised all
by reaching the final round last year, have the
privilege of opening the 2005 World League with
their first Intercontinental Round match in
Varna starting at 18:00 (local time) on Friday.
It promises to be a riveting contest with Cuba
showing some encouraging preseason form having
beaten Greece and Argentina in two friendly
series while Bulgaria, who finished fourth last
year, go into the match with a new coach in
33-year-old Martin Stoev.
