Poland, Greece, Italy, Cuba, Bulgaria and France chase last two finals tickets

Lausanne, Switzerland, June 29, 2005 When the 2005 World League started on May 28, who would have thought six teams would still be in contention for the Final Round going into the last weekend of the Intercontinental Round?

In Pool B, all four teams - Italy, Cuba, Bulgaria and France have the chance of joining hosts Serbia and Montenegro and defending champions Brazil, who qualified for the Final Round last weekend, while Pool C is down to a two horse race between Poland and Greece.

It is a magic formula and one, which will have all the fans on the edge of their seats, cheering on their heroes, hoping they can clinch the ultimate - a trip to Belgrade for the four-team Final Round, which runs from July 8-10.

Bulgaria and Italy start the festivities this weekend when they play the first of their two matches in Varna at 15:00 GMT (18:00 local time) on Friday with the home side needing two victories to just stay in contention. Italy, meanwhile, are level with Cuba with six wins and four defeats so need to record a better result than Cuba, who play France this weekend, or match Cuba and improve their point ratio.

Meanwhile, in Pool C, leaders Poland (7-3) visit Argentina needing just one victory to seal a Final Round spot ahead of Greece (5-5), who visit Serbia and Montenegro, who have turned around their form with the return big guns Ivan Miljkovic, Andrija Geric and captain Nikola Grbic. It is by no means an easy task for Poland, but the form they have shown so far in this tournament makes them hot favourites to advance.

With Brazil having already sealed the Pool A ticket to the finals, the world number one team will be looking to iron out some deficiencies when they host Venezuela, who are aiming for their best ever finish in the World League. Portugal are guaranteed their best ever World League position (either second or third) but will be hoping to seal second spot in the group with two wins over Japan.
