Italy must do the double - Simeonov
June
10, 2005 –Italy’s Ventzislav Simeonov says
victory in this weekend’s 2005 World League
Intercontinental Round Pool B matches against
Bulgaria, his country of birth, is imperative if
last year’s silver medallists are to reach the
final round.
With the winner of each of the three pools
guaranteed a spot in the final round, Italy are
currently in second place in their group with
two victories and two defeats, just ahead of
France on set ratio but behind the leaders Cuba,
who have only suffered one defeat (at the hands
of Italy in round two) from their four matches.
Bulgaria are fourth in the group with only one
victory.
Pic: Italy have split both their matches
against France and Cuba in the first two opening
rounds
“We have to win both the matches this weekend if
we want to arrive at the Final Four,’ Ventzislav
Simeonov said. “Bulgaria obviously needs to win
as well but if we will play with more continuity
than in the past we should win without problems.”
Italy’s captain Valerio Vermiglio is also hoping
to make it a double this weekend and hopes his
side can repeat the form, which saw them beat
Cuba 3-1 (25-18, 25-20, 19-25, 25-16) in Monza.
“We have to play like the second match against
Cuba because Bulgaria is a strong adversary,” he
said. “We must control their number six Matey
Kaziysky because he is a very strong player and
if we can do that we will win both matches.”
The first match is on Friday at 18.30 GMT in
Roseto d. Abruzzi. |
