Only one team per pool left unbeaten

Switzerland, June 4, 2005 – Defending champions
Brazil, exciting up and comers Cuba and the
impressive Poland are the three teams which
currently lead the different pools - A, B and C
respectively - after Saturday's action of the
2005 World League Intercontinental Second Round.
The world number one team Brazil beat Portugal
3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-23) in Lisbon to collect
their third win from as many matches and hand
Portugal their first defeat.Venezuela, meanwhile,
jumped to third in Pool A after a 3-1 (22-25,
28-26, 25-21, 25-21) win over Japan.

“We are far from being in our best form,” Brazil
coach Bernardo Rezende said. “We made many
errors, but we are better physically. In the
third set we let Portugal take advantage of any
opportunities given.”
Meanwhile, in Pool B, Cuba continue to lead the
group with three wins from as many matches after
beating Italy 3-1 (24-26, 25-18, 25-20, 25-22)
on Friday, while Bulgaria lifted themselves
above Italy, who play on Sunday, at the foot of
the table with their first win of the tournament
after beating France 3-0 (26-24, 25-19, 25-15)
on Saturday. France is second with two wins and
two defeats.
While finally, in Pool C, Poland have jumped to
the top of the pool with four victories
following a 3-0 (26-24, 25-17, 27-25) win over
Greece, which followed Friday’s 3-2 (17-25,
25-23, 19-25, 25-20, 15-13) victory. Greece are
second with two wins and two defeats, while
final round hosts Serbia and Montenegro are
ahead of winless Argentina at the foot of the
table with their first win in four matches.
Sunday’s action sees Venezuela and Japan and
Brazil and Portugal do battle in Pool A while
Argentina and Serbia and Montenegro play off
again in Pool C.
Italy’s home game against Cuba is the last one
of the round. |
