Critical weekend ahead for Cuba says coach
Busto
Arsizio, Italy, June 3, 2005 – Cuba coach
Roberto Gracia says this weekend’s 2005 World
League Intercontinental Round two is crucial in
their aim to reaching the final round in Serbia
and Montenegro.
With the winner’s of each pool qualifying for
the final round, Cuba currently leads Pool B
with two wins from as many matches and any
further victories against last year’s silver
medalists Italy, would send Cuba well on their
way to achieving their goal.
“The two matches against Italy in Busto Arsizio
and Monza are two crucial turning points in our
adventure in the World League,” Garcia said. “We
would like to reach the finals in Belgrade and,
why not, to repeat the success in Milan in 1998.
What a great day for Volleyball in Cuba! But now
we have to succeed with our first target: Italy.”
Pic: Cuba beat Bulgaria twice in the opening
weekend
Italian coach Gian Paolo Montali is equally
apprehensive about this weekend’s matches. “Cuba
is a very strong team and they have impressed
me,” he said. “They have players like Juantorena,
Bell and Gonzales that have played together and
most of all players that are very well prepared
and very motivated after the friendly games they
played against Argentina and Greece. Then the
success in the opening series against Bulgaria
is something you must not take for granted.”
