Greece edges Japan in four, to retain perfect record in weekend 1
Greece dropped a set, but managed to beat Japan for the second day in a row, to retain a perfect record following the completion of Weekend 1 of the Intercontinental Round of the 2003 World League. Greece opened the day with two easy sets, but faltered in the third, following a change of setters, before picking up speed again in the fourth, to clinch the victory.

"Greece is a better and more experienced team and we managed to improve in the second set," said the home team's head coach, Stelios Prosalikas.

Greece's starting setter, Vassilis Kournetas, was substituted by Theodoros Bozidis towards the end of the second set, and Greece lost some of its momentum. The home team led the score in the third until Japan caught up at 15-15. Then, Japan gained a three-point lead which it held until the end of the set.

Still, Greece said its final word in the fourth set, when it picked up again where it had left off, and finished the match with a comfortable 25-16, as team captain Marios Giourdas once more emerged as the match's top scorer, with a total of 18 points. Saito Nobuharu was Japan's top scorer, with 11 points.
