The final phase of the 2002 World League turned out to be a tournament of dreams for the 198cm Russian star with the boyish face.
In just his second appearance in the elite competition, the 24-year-old Abramov assumed the role of being the decisive force within the powerful and ambitious Russian team and led his teammates to their first ever World League victory, even if they skated briefly on thin ice in the preliminary finals in Brazil, falling to Spain and just slipping into the finals as lucky loser in their group.
Abramov's more than impressive performance resulted in a well-deserved award for the Best Spiker and the third Best Scorer at the tournament. But more importantly, he confirmed his all round ability and was named the Best Receiver of the finals. He continued his sublime form at the World Championship in Argentina to again be one of the stars of the tournament finishing as the third Best Spiker.
Ambramov's success comes as no surprise following his promising performances during his youth career. At the 1999 Junior World championship in Thailand he was presented with both the Best Attacker and the Best Server awards, and was also named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.
With Abramov - who plays for the Russian club Dinamo Moscow - in their ranks Russia, the world's number one ranked team, will again be one of the favorites to take the 2003 World League as they prepare to defend their title.
