He's
like a big cuddly bear. But, if he is ever taken lightly
Andrija Geric will punish you severely as he showed in
the 2003 World League. After Serbia and Montenegro's
fantastic performance to claim the silver medal behind
Brazil, Geric walked away with the Best Blocker and Best
Server awards.
The 203cm middle blocker from Novi Sad is a huge player
in the Serbia and Montenegro side with his huge physical
presence dominating centre court but he also has a huge
psychological input. This guy knows how to spur on a
team and don't be surprised to see him offering a piece
of advice or leading the group celebrations.
There's no doubting that with the likes of Miljkovic,
Vujevic and the Grbic brothers the Serbia and Montenegro
lineup is full of stars but with out Geric, it would be
a team desperately short on emotion. Having
"Titanic" listed as his favourite movie is a
perfect illustration of the depth of this man.
He's also a great favourite with the fans. Never one to
turn down a moment to involve the crowd Geric thrives on
the atmosphere the packed stadiums at international
volleyball provides and is always up for the big
occasion.
But don't be lulled in to thinking the No 12 for Serbia
and Montenegro is a walkover. Immensely strong, the
26-year-old has been part of the Serbia and Montenegro
side (formerly Yugoslavia) since 1995 and was
inspirational in Yugoslavia's gold medal at the Sydney
Olympics in 2000 and a European Championship title a
year later.
Another addition to the trophy cabinet beckons again in
2003.
