Hugo Gaspar at only 20-years-of-age is fast-becoming one of the stars of Portuguese and world volleyball.
At 200cm he is the tallest player in Portugal's lineup and since making his international debut at the 2001 World League he has blossomed into one of their most fearsome attacking weapons.
During last year's World Championship in Argentina he was consistently a source of points and finished every match he played in as the team's best scorer. However, an ankle injury during the second game did send fears through the Portugal camp that he would miss the rest of the tournament but after a one-match rest he came back with stellar performances to lead Portugal to seventh spot.
Everything is exciting about this middle blocker from Leiria. Young, enthusiastic and with the carefree attitude to succeed in volleyball his name will certainly be on everyone's lips for years to come and a talent like Gaspar bodes well for Portuguese volleyball.
Tall and gangly he fits right in to the mould of a blocker cum attacker and following his experiences at the 2002 World Championship his name will have been projected in to many notebooks of volleyball aficionados as a player with unlimited potential.
