Again a close match with a lucky winner
Spain defeated Poland 3-2 (18-25, 27-25, 24-26, 25-23 and 15-11) in the second game of week 2 in a match played in Castellón. Spaniards suffered once again to beat polish but confidence of local players gave Spain the victory in a disputed game that showed the similar level of playing of both teams.

Second Russian victory in 2003 World League
Russian national team defeated Venezuela by second time in a row, 3-0 (25-15 25-17 25-22), and reached first place of Pool A in this 2003 World League Edition. Although Venezuela got better reception than the day before, it was not enough to resist the strong attacking Russian system. Venezuela played with heart, but it was not enough to pass the opposite high blocking and strong serving. Cabimas Dome was the hot scenery for this hot match.

Pool C - Intercontinental Round

Cuba beat Bulgaria 3-2 (20-25, 18-25, 25-22, 31-29, 15-13) - duration 2:04

Bulgaria posponed it's first victory after 5 years out of the World League, loosing 2:3 to Cuba home.
The things started not so good for Bulgaria with some beautifull attacs at the oposite side. Cubans caught all spikes of Vlado Nikolov and took the lead 8:12. The host team returned in the game equaling the score 15:15. After that everything was just fine for Bulgaria. With some very good things on the field by Plamen Konstantinov and Nikolov they closed the set 25:20. After that they was one team in the hall - Bulgaria. They destroyed the play of Cuba and made the 4000 crowd in the hall to scream of joy. That lasted till the 20th point of the 3th set. Cuban coach Ramos Rivas changed all of his side and that was quite effective. Second setter Salas became the most valuable player and led his team to the equalisation and to the win in the end of the set 25:22. The same scenario happened in the 4th part of the game. At the end Bulgarians had the chance to win the match but they missed 4 match balls and the set either - 29:31. In the tiebreak they was only Cuba 13:15.

Solid victory by Serbia and Montenegro
Despite a good start in the first set the Dutch couldn't resist the powerfull play of Serbia and Montenegro. When the Olympic Champion settled into the game they took a solid victory. After winning the first set, the Dutch team was not able to give good competition to the Olympic Champions.

Bulgaria found the best way to come back in the World league competition, defeating Cuba 3:0 (25:19, 32:30, 25:15) in their rematch of the first leg in pool C. Cheered by 5000 crowd the host team made just what must have been happened 2 days before.

Remarkable recover of the Netherlands surprises Serbia and Montenegro
As well as their own enthusiastic crowd as the team of Serbia and Montenegro, the Netherlands surprised by an unexpected success in the second match. Because of a superb block and wonderful attacking of the Dutch, Serbia and Montenegro couldn't play their one game.

Pool D - Intercontinental Round

Japan beat France 3-1 (25-15, 26-24, 22-25, 25-21) - duration 1:49

Big surprise on Friday evening at Nantes where the Japanese team won its first match against the French team.
Reacting sporadically , without imposing its game , and mistreated in the serve receive
compartment of its game by the Japanese team's serves - 4 direct points in the first game -
France logically gave up the first games. Two sets where Hosokawa serving , and Yamamoto
and Ito concluding with hot spikes , were the kingpins of the japanese success. Counting
3 points behind in the second game until 17-20, the French equalized the score on an ace from
Granvorka ( 22-22 ) before wasting a set ball ( 24-23 ) to lose ( 24-26 ).
After getting back to the surface in the a laborous third game ( 25-22 ) , ponctuated by 8
equalizations between 14-14 and 22-22, France was defeated at the end of the fourth game
( 21 - 25 ) .

Greece beat Czech Republic 3-2 (21-25, 25-23, 19-25, 25-22, 15-13) - duration 2:22

Greece edges the Czech Republic in five, to retain perfect record
Greece twice came back from 0-1 and 1-2, to narrowly edge the Czech Republic in five sets and retain a perfect record after three matches in Pool D of the Intercontinental Round of the 2003 World League. Greece also took advantage of France's defeat in the hands of Japan, to take the lead in the standings of the pool. Once more, it was Marios Giourdas who led the scoring for Greece, with 20 points, although the Czech Republic's Dalibor Polak, despite giving Greece the final victory with a wide attack at 14-13 in the tie-break, emerged the top scorer of the match with a total of 28 points.

France strikes back -
Quite the opposite of yesterday evening's match , the French team dominated in all areas of play to beat the Japanese team in four sets. Building on a much better block performance
( 11 winning blocks in the first 2 sets ) and showing heightened aggressivity in attack and service , the French team left very few options to the Japanese.In the third set the Japanese seemed to come back in play ( 22-25 ), cashing-in on good serves.The fourth set was
solidly contested during which, the Japanese saved 4 match balls before Daquin's concluding block ( 29-27 ).
Czech Republic beat Greece 3-0 (29-27, 25-22, 25-23) - duration 1:32

Debutant Czechs hand Greece its first defeat in the 2003 World League
A multitude of unforced errors, as well as poor serving and poor receiving, cost Greece its first defeat in Pool D of the Intercontinental Round of the 2003 World League. The Czech Republic, a last-minute substitute for Argentina is making its first ever World League appearance and scored its first victory --an impressive straight-set affair in just over an hour and a half, at the city of Lamia, in central Greece. The Czechs outplayed Greece in all skills, scoring an impressive 9 points off aces and 11 off blocks, with Premysl Kubala emerging the top scorer for the winners with 12 points. Nikos Roumeliotis of Greece was the top scorer of the match with 16 points.
