Russia beat Italy 3-2 (20-25, 25-20, 19-25, 25-22, 15-13) - duration 1:48
08-Jul, start time: 17:37, end time: 19:25 - Attendance: 2,200
Russia beats Italy in a spectacular tie-breaker
Both teams tried to impose their different ways of conceiving volleyball. Italy took use of the fast attacking actions of the opposites to overcome the always powerful Russian block and to win the first set (20-25).
Russia came back in the second set. Unlike the first period, the Russian blocking had terrifying effects in Italian playing. Besides this, the Russian squad put in so many problems to the opponents that Italy was forced to be behind in the scoreboard for almost the whole period. This being so, Russia tied the game 1-1 (25-20) and paid back losing the first set.
And since this was a come and go match, it was in the script that Italy had to win the third set. As in the first period, the differences were not too obvious until the last points, but the precise leading of setter Meoni and the powerfull spikes of captain Giani gave Italians enough advantage to take the lead in the game (19-25)
Russia didn't surrender, and thanks to the blocks and to the attacks of an inspired Baranov forced the fifth set (25-22).
The exchange of points, spikes and fruitful attacks was the main characteristic of the tie-break. With only 1 point difference in the scoreboard, Russia was able to control the tension of the playing, to impose the tempo of the game and win the set, producing a transcendental victory that may lead them to the final victory.
