Bulgaria beats Cuba 3-1 in Havana
Havana.- Bulgaria defeated Cuba 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 25-19, 25-13) on a rainy night that substantially decreased the number of spectator in Havana's Ciudad Deportiva Hall. In the first set, Bulgaria started ahead and held a narrow lead over Cuba 17-16, but their efficient block prevailed over their adversaries' defensive errors to win 25-20. Cuba took the initiative 4-1 in the second set and consolidaded the advantage 16-11, as Tomas Aldazabal, Pavel Pimienta, Yosleider Cala managed to beat the Eastern Europeans' defense and tied the score 25-22. But the Balkans reacted and based their performance again on Vladimir Nikolov, Hristo Tsvetanov and Plamen Konstantinov as well as their tall block to win the third set 25-19. In the fourth period, the visiting team continued to display a good performance on court and found almost no answer from their rivals, on the way to an easy 25-13 victory. Tsvetanov led Bulgaria's attacks with 17 points, supported by Nikolov (15) and Konstantinov (14). As usual, Aldazabal was Cuba's best man with 15 points, followed by Cala and Pimienta (11). Bulgaria now leads Cuba 2-1 in their duels and the local squad will try to take revenge on Saturday to improve their WL performance from last year's edition.
