Italy allows Germany victory in second last match
Already qualified for the final four of Madrid, Italy was humbled 3-1 by a very aggressive Germany who defended well and were well supported by Liefke who hammered home 22 points as the best attacker. Germany played well, aggressively and with great enthusiasm while Italy experienced many difficulties in the opening phase. Indeed Moculescu's German team called the shots from the opening whistle while the Italians trailed dismally and seemed to struggle. Italy failed to recover their usual form until the second set, largely thanks to the efforts of Meoni. Italy took a 4-1 lead before their reception let them down and Germany surged past them once more. Italy had to deploy all their skills and tactics to emerge with a 28-26 victory. Again in the third set the Italian team found itself in difficulty and coach Montalli made some changes in his lineup. Germany, even though they made some errors, managed to stay ahead and toook the third set 25-22. By then they had enough confidence to hold the advantage and run off the court for what will be a confidence booster for the hosts of this year's European Championship. /mh
