Brazil beat Portugal by 3-1
Brazil scored a 3-1 victory over Portugal on Friday in Betim in their first match of the final weekend of the World League Intercontinental Round. the Brazilians first sacrificed the first set following many mistakes but then settled down to take a deserved win. If the World Champions win their second clash on Saturday they will top the Pool B table.
Portugal played very well in the first set and capitalized well on many reception and serving errors by Brazil. The Portuguese 25-21 victory in the first set was driven by an efficient attack led by Hugo Gaspar and Jorge Alves, with strong serving from other members of the lineup.
Brazil recovered quickly and the beginning of the following set was much more balanced. However Portuguese setter Nuno Pinheiro twisted his ankle and had to retire, to be replaced by Fabio Milhazes. The match continued but Portugal ran into trouble at the same time as Brazil began to receive well, which made things easier for the Brazilian setter Ricardinho.
Brazil put on an impressive display in the third set and held tight to the advantage from the first whistle. Middle-blocker André Heller who came in for Henrique during the set put on an impressive display in block an attack.
Brazil continued to apply pressure in the fourth set and not even the return to the court of Nuno was able to motivate the visitors. Brazil again were impressive in blocking and defense and were rewarded with the victory.
