China wins third in a row
China took it's third consecutive victory against Venezuela, this time 3 sets to 2 in the Barquisimeto Dome, but both teams exit the tournament after this final Intercontinental Round after Pool B leaders Italy and Spain advanced.
Star player Ernardo Gomez once again commanded the Latin American offensive allowing Venezuela a good start and an 8-5 lead before the first time out. Venezuela held onto the lead most of the set, but powerful attacking Shi Hairong, who was one of the best players in the Asian squad, added to several service errors by Venezuelans gave China the first set, 27-29. In the second and third set, David Suarez made some substitutions and brought on Carlos Luna next to Andy Rojas to support Gomez in the attack. The move paid off and Venezuela won the second set 25-19, and the third 25-20.
Sensing real danger, the Chinese threw up their Great Wall of defense to radically improve their blocking to take the set 25-16 and force the tiebreaker. Sheng Qiong's attacking shattered Venezuelan hopes and China romped home to win the tiebreaker by three points and the match. The teams face each other again on Sunday in the Cabimas Dome to wrap up their participation in the 13th edition of the World league and Venezuela will be looking for a victory to exit the tournament with at least one win to its credit.
