Spain so far invincible in World League
Spain continued its unbroken run of victory in the 2002 World League with a 3-0 victory over Venezuela in the first of its two-match tie this weekend in the Barquisimeto Dome. The setting accuracy of Cosme Prenafeta, supported by the attacking of Guillermo Falasca and Enrique de La Fuente foiled Venezuela's block in the first set and allowed the visitors to soar to an easy 25-18 result. Venezuela closed ranks in the second set and were more effective on the net, while also managing to capitalize on service errors by Spain, but then a slip by Manzanillo put Spain 24-23 ahead, and Guillermo Falasca, one of the best servers so far in this World League forced a 25-23 final second set result.
The third set was a mirror image of the first and Venezuela was unable to sustain their second set tempo and Spain with a block by Juan Jose Salvador against Ernardo Gomez put them in the lead by 18-13, setting the scene for the Team Leader in Pool B to charge on to a 25-16 finish in the third set. The teams meet again on Sunday for the second match in the tie in the city of Cabimas.
