Brazil goes down to Poland; first loss in 2002 World League Intercontinentals
Poland pulled off a major upset against the mighty titleholders Brazil on Friday in Goiana, Brazil when they defeated the home favorites 3-0 in a match lasting 1 hour 20 minutes in front of a crowd of almost 10,000 fans.
Poland went out strong in defense and held off the Brazilians with excellent blocking in the first set. The Brazilians lifted they game and improved their service average to tie, but their errors in reception let them down and they conceded the first set to the visitors 21-25 in just 25 minutes.
Poland's wall of victory again proved impenetrable in the second set and Brazil, despite the efforts of star player Giba, was unable to make the breakthrough. Poland ran up a five point lead and went on the take the set 25-22.
Brazil tried hard to get back into the action in the third set, but their serving continued to let them down and Poland wrapped up the match and left the stadium to celebrate their victory against the South American giants. Poland now moves to second in Pool A ahead of the second match against Brazil on Saturday.
