Poland books their ticket to Brazil
Although almost a foregone conclusion, Poland secured its 3-1 victory against Portugal in their opening match on Friday to guarantee their ticket to the finals of the World league in Brazil. Portugal opened strongly and took the first, but the Poles, responding to the support of a crowd of almost 9,000 in the Polish city of Wroclaw, pulled out some great service and blocking to take the remaining sets. It was Poland's fifth consecutive victory in the World League Intercontinental Round.

Brazil underlined its position as Pool A leader in the Intercontinental Rounds of the 2002 World League by pulling off a tough victory over Argentina in the Newell's Old Boys Stadium in Rosario. The Argentina national team will say goodbye to the tournament on Sunday when the teams meet again for the final match in the preliminaries.

With a ticket already booked to Brazil for the World League finals,, Polish head coach Wspanialy decided to rest some players and bring on instead others from the substitutes bench for the opening of the match. The subs rewarded their coach with a fine performance that set the stage for a victory. The two sides shadowboxed their way through the opening phase, trading the lead back and forth.

The Venezuelan volleyball team conquered its first victory in its last match of this edition of World league after beating China 3 sets to 1 in Cabimas Dome. The blocking and defense accuracy were the keys for the first victory overall as a host for this Latin American squad in the World League.

ITALY DEFEATED SPAIN IN THREE SETS
Italy defeated Spain in three sets in the last match of the Intercontinental Round Pool B, played in Caserta. The result of this match was not a key for the qualification to the Final Eight. Both teams will be in Brazil. The "Azzurri" suffered the Spanish team only in the first half of the first set, then made a "front runner" match.

Pool C - Intercontinental Round

Russia beat Netherlands 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 35-33) - duration 1:22

With both teams already through to the final, Netherlands decided to make the trip without some of its key players, using instead the possibility of giving three young 20-year-olds the international experience of playing one of the top teams in the world. Joppe Paulides, Robert Horstink and Joram Maan all showed their talent by turning in a remarkable performance, especially in the third set, a hard, 34 minutes struggle that finally went to the Russians 3-0 (25:19, 25:15, 35:33).

FANTASTIC VOLLEYBALL MATCH IN THE FULL HALL "VOJVODINA "
In a full hall of the Sports Center "Vojvodina", Yugoslav Team showed its old face and played the way its public wanted to see them. Demanding from the players to win, the public gave them all support and sincerely enjoyed every rally and every point of both teams.
Close result in sets showed the strength of the French Team, greatly motivated to win again, but it was a change in the Yugoslav team that brought new force and they did all to return to what they really are capable of doing.
