Greece swooped to victory against France on Friday night with a surprise 3-1 win over the Pool D table leaders to keep their qualification hopes alive for the final round in Brazil. It was their fifth win in the series of nine matches so far played and three to go to complete the Intercontinental Round playoffs. The upstart Greeks delivered only the second beating to the French, who with their seven wins so far, against only two losses, have felt little pain. Greece took an immediate initiative in the match and won the first two sets, before France scraped back into the game in the third. The French attempted to apply pressure in the fourth, but were unable to disturb Greek confidence. The visitors took the match 3-1 (25-20, 25-17, 17-25, 26-24), ahead of the return match on Saturday night. /mh
