Russia too much for disappointed Dutch
Russia overpowered a disappointed Dutch side on Friday in their struggle for first place in Pool C of the World League, emerging with 3-1 victory that saw the only threat from Dutch in the second set.
Russia powered into the first set and quickly ran up a 12-4 lead before Dutch coach Bert Goedkoop pressed the panic button and took his second time out in the first set to try to get him team back on track. The Dutch seemed to have no answer to the impressive blocking and spiking of the Russians and fell into a series of errors, giving the opposition the first set 25-12 in just 18 minutes. The Russians, helped by Lakovlev, quickly ran up a 6-point lead (8-2) in the second before the Dutch scrambled back into the match to level at 10-10. Both teams shadowboxed their way through the rest of the set, before two fantastic service points by Schuil allowed his side to level 1-1. In the third set, both teams made a lot of unforced errors, but it was the Russians that took the advantage and went up 2-1. They then applied pressure for an early four point lead in the fourth, although Dutch setter van Gendt made their job more difficult. Good blocking by Koulechov and Abramov finished the match for Russia and gave them a solid 1-3 victory.
