Germany scored a 3-1 victory over Russia on Saturday in the second round of the World League Intercontinental Round, signaling that they are becoming a side the be reckoned with this season. The Germans last week tied 1-1 with The Netherlands in the first weekend of this six-weekend competition, thus unsettling another strong team. The Russian team started shakily and their early mistakes allowed Germany to pick up a 6-0 advantage. Russia then pulled themselves together to level, and even go up 13-12, only to lose the next 7 points and the set. With things looking black for the Russians, the coaches made some quick substitutions, resulting in a second set victory for the home 25-17. Now level at 1-1, the third set proved the decider. Russia trailed 3-4 points through most of the set, before pulling back to level at 23-23. It was not enough however to stop the confident Germans who charged on to wrap up the match. /mh
