Russia def. Germany 3:2 in a spectacular match
Russia scored a 3-2 victory over Germany in the city of Kazan in their first match of Intercontinental Round Two of the FIVB World League. It took the Russians a marathon 2 hours 21 minutes to dismiss the visitors, who proved themselves much more effective in blocking on Friday night.
Germany took the first set, pushing the Russians to succumb 25-27 and to go one set up. The home team then gathered their wits and took the next two sets quite comfortably 25-22 and 25-21. The Germans fought back hard for 33 minutes in the next set, applying enough pressure to emerge 32-30 and level at 2-all. The Russians failed to convert two match balls when their two best players lost service and German player Marco Liefke served an ace to wrap up the set.
Russia then steadied to take the decider 17-15.
The German team is clearly much stronger in this year's competition, as last year they failed to win a set in their preliminary round. Their unexpected victory over Olympic Champions Yugoslavia at the European Championships in 2001 has clearly been a confidence booster.
