Team profile

The Dominican Republic have been regular participants in the FIVB World Grand Prix since 2004, with two eighth-place finishes their best results. Last year the world No. 9 finished 12th and booked their place in this year’s edition through the 2011 Pan American Cup where they finished second to Brazil, beating world No. 1 USA in the process. They also finished fourth at the Pan-American Games in Guadalajara, with the United States gaining revenge in the bronze-medal playoff. Gold also eluded them in the NORCECA Championship where their American rivals beat them again. They rounded out the year by finishing eighth at the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Cup in Japan registering wins over Kenya, Germany, Serbia and Korea while Bethania de la Cruz topped the scorers throughout the tournament in a monumental effort from the individual.
Coach profile

Brazilian Marcos Kwiek worked as an assistant coach for Brazil’s women’s team from 2003 to 2007 and has been coach of the Dominican Republic team since 2008, when he took over from Beato Miguel Cruz. He guided the team to a silver medal in the 2009 Pan American Cup and gold at the NORCECA Women’s Continental Championship in the same year. The Dominican women finished third at the FIVB World Grand Champions Cup in 2009 before taking gold at both the Pan American Cup and Central American and Caribbean Games in 2010.
