Serbia edge Thailand in straight sets thriller

Thailand blockers stopping a strong attack from Sanja Malagurski of Serbia
Macau, China, August 26, 2011 – Serbia managed to elude a tight match with Thailand as they picked up a straight sets (25-23, 25-22, 25-23) win in Pool A of round robin play in the final round of the 2011 FIVB World Grand Prix at the Macau East Asian Games Dome in China on Friday earning them top spot in the group and semifinal match against defending champions USA.

Jovana Brakocevic posted another outstanding performance scoring 21 points for Serbia.

Although Serbia was the team favoured to easily win the match, their opponents dictated the tempo for much of the match. Serbia was challenged to work hard for every point as Thailand put up good coverage at the net and had a well-positioned backcourt defence. Thailand’s offense cannot be counted out as well as they found ways to create plays that outsmarted the Serbian blockers. However Serbia dug deep to edge the initial set 25-23.

Jovana Brakocevic’s leadership in the Serbian attack mattered most but Thailand’s dynamic offensive and defensive tactics continued to hound her team. Serbia were well scouted by Thailand as most of their attackers were kept under control. However the debutants again found a way round a gritty Thai performance to pick up the set.

Thailand refused to give up on their challenge against the Serbians by keeping their lead close in the third. Serbia enforced their height advantage and made consecutive blocks on the Thai attack. They then applied more pressure to Thailand on a more rejuvenated offensive tactic of blasting spikes on the wings to pound on the weakening block of their opponent. But Serbia made a series of errors towards the end of the set allowing Thailand to get back within one point at 24-23 until a service error by Kaensing Uttaiwan put an end to a solid match.
