Nakhon Pathom, Thailand, August 5, 2011 – Asian champions Thailand got off to a great start in the 2011 FIVB World Grand Prix preliminary round Pool B by brushing off Peru in straight sets (25-20, 25-13, 25-16) at the Nakhon Pathom Gymnasium on Friday.

Thailand, who won the Asian Women's Club Championship under the Chang banner, had their sights firmly set on avenging Peru for their 3-1 loss in the final of the recent Latin Cup in Lima.

Despite the strong home support, the Thai girls started nervously and were five points back at 7-2 in the first set. But they came back strongly behind the powerful attack of Onuma Sittirak. The 175-cm Thai, who won the Best Spiker award at the 2009 Asian Senior Women's Volleyball Championship in Vietnam when Thailand landed their first major title, performed superbly as Thailand caught up at 11-11. Amporn Hyapha’s fast spikes and good work by setter Nootsara Tomkom and Pleumjit Thinkaow put Thailand in control and they took the first set 25-20.

The win in the opening set gave Thailand a big boost in the second set, and they performed beyond expectations in front of more than 2,500 spectators. Thailand showed their excellent offensive combination work, with Wilavan Apinyapong and Onuma attacking devastatingly at the net and Amporn and Nootsara solid in blocking. The host side took the totally one-sided second set 25-13.

The third set was again dominated by the hosts as they raced to a 9-4 lead. Peru started to pull their game together, hoping to revive their fortunes against the hosts, but Thailand remained strong. Leading 18-12, Thailand replaced their best players and brought on subs from the bench, including Rasamee Supamool and Kamonporn Sukmak. The result was the same and Thailand easily took the set 25-16.
